/ Discussing with a friend, best qualities to have? Landed on something of:
judgment, decision making, discernment, perspicacity, efficacious, investable
Note that I didn’t say “sharper, smarter”.
A hint of pragmatic and realistic view is valuable.
What do I mean by this?
judgment = having “good” opinions
decision making = making decisions which yield net positive outcomes in aggregate, if every decision you make is rated 1-10 based on the outcome, the average is >5 ideally.
discernment = able to see things for what they really are (i.e., second, third, fourth derivatives…until it reaches some common base where deriving more is less fruitful than it is helpful)
perspicacity = I came across this word looking through a thesaurus. Really like it.
= refers to the quality of having a keen understanding of things, being able to judge situations or people effectively, and often quickly grasping complex issues. It involves sharp discernment, clear-sightedness, and the ability to make astute judgments or assessments. Perspicacity is generally associated with wisdom and insight, and it often implies a level of depth in understanding or perception that goes beyond what is obvious or superficial.
efficacious = doing things that have real effects, that make things better, that “work”, that have a positive and desired output
investable = not in the traditional sense, but that you can do things that you personally back or have conviction in. for example, in a non-monetary sense, if you have conviction in a project or activity, when repeated, compounding over the long term, that seems investable. things that do not compound or rather, things that probably increase linearly or on a log scale are not investable. you want outsized returns. more output than input. growth. is there something in there that is amenable to growth and compounding.
Going to frame everything in this lens. Goal of “Do I have better judgment, decision making, and am I more perspicacious than I was yesterday, last week, last month, and last year…” because then in some event after 1, 5, 10 years, hopefully this should compound immensely!
tl;dr a few good qualities to have listed above?
Cheers,
Vish
